Job description

Travelling around Aotearoa New Zealand, you will deliver science based shows and exhibits to school aged audiences as part of the Science Roadshow. You will be part of a small team involved in the day to day delivery, maintenance and administration of this valued science programme to schools. Duties include giving verbal presentations (with the aid of props) to groups of students ranging in size from 30 to 200 at a time. Age wise the students can be from Yr1 to Yr10, with most being Yr 5-8.

As a Roadshow Heavy Combination driver, you will be responsible for driving a Class 5, 3 axle articulated box body 15 metre combination as part of your role. The combination must be manoeuvred through school grounds and reversed up to the hall or gymnasium in preparation for unloading. Consequently your reversing and general manoeuvring skills in close quarters will need to be exceptional. As part of the team you will be responsible for unloading/loading at each venue 12 lineal metres of science equipment by way of tail-lift. Some of the equipment is heavy and does require a reasonable level of fitness and strength.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum Class 5 licence
  • capable of operating an Eaton Twin Splitter gear box
  • good people skills
  • great oral presentation skills
  • an ability to work under pressure
  • fit and strong
  • a high level of initiative and a ‘can do’ attitude.

Other useful skills could include: experience in teaching; a tertiary science based qualification, theatre work, knowledge of Te Reo Maori, trade skills such as cabinet maker, mechanical, electrical or electronics.


Touring Aotearoa New Zealand. When away from home, all meals, accommodation (shared house or motel unit) and travel will be paid for by the Roadshow. You will be responsible for getting yourself to and from Auckland Airport at either end of your duty rotations. This position involves considerable time away from home. Typically staff are rostered 4 weeks on, 1 week off (paid lieu) or equivalent. When operating around the greater Auckland area the lieu rotation (and associated accommodations etc) won’t apply but a vehicle will be provided to facilitate return journeys from your home to the programme location or a mileage rate for use of personal car could be agreed.

Please note:

  • A police check is mandatory, as is holding a Class 1 (car) full manual licence; and a Class 5 licence
  • Applicants for this position should have NZ residency or a valid NZ work permit.
  • A comprehensive driving test will be undertaken.
